Diversity & Inclusion

At the BCCJ, we are committed to advancing Diversity and Inclusion (D&I), and this runs through everything we do. D&I is embedded in our Governance and operations, recruitment of people, elections for our Executive Committee (Excom), nominees and judges for the British Business Awards (BBA) supplier diversity.

Since April 2012, we have been running D&I programme designed to promote greater understanding of, and develop support mechanisms for, the growth of diverse groups in the workplace in Japan, including: Women, People with disabilities, LGBTQ community, Generation Y / Millennials. We believe diversity to be vital for the future growth and sustainability of the Japanese and global economy.

BCCJでは、ダイバーシティ&インクルージョン(D&I)の推進に取り組んでおり、その実現のためにあらゆることを行っています。以下の取り組みにおいてD&Iの考えが取り入れられています:統制・運営、人材採用、経営委員会(Excom)役員選挙の実施、British Business Awards (BBA)の候補者・審査員の選出、サプライヤーの多様性。

日本の職場における多様性の発展をより理解し、またそれらを支援するような仕組みを構築するため、2012年4月から以下を含むD&Iプログラムを実施しています。女性・障がい者・LGBTQ コミュニティ・Y世代・ミレニアル世代。私たちは、日本及び世界経済の持続可能性、そして将来的な発展において多様性は極めて重要なものであると考えます。

BCCJ Diversity & Inclusion Survey 2021

We want to put diversity and inclusion on the agenda, and need YOUR help to do it!

The BCCJ believes that the first step in creating this inclusive environment is to understand where Japan, as a workforce and as a population, stands on recognising differences, and to what extent individuals with different identities feel valued, leveraged and welcome. To achieve this, we will conduct a nationwide survey, which encompasses different sectors and different levels of seniority, to understand how Japan is experiencing diversity and inclusion. In order to conduct this survey, we are looking for contributions from members (view here).

Diversity in the Workplace

Because diversity in the workplace matters! The changes taking place in our industries today are unprecedented. We need new ideas, creative approaches and fresh perspectives, which can only come from having diverse voices.

Did you know? In 2018, the BCCJ pledged to fight underrepresentation of women on panel lineups by eliminating all-male panel ‘Manel’ lineups from our events. We believe this element of inclusivity should be evident across sectors, and will work towards narrowing other gender gaps as well.

The BCCJ runs frequent events across the D&I spectrum, inviting thought-leaders and Chamber members to draw on their ideas and experiences to the benefit of progressive and necessary change. Paralliance

The Paralliance is a partnership of 20 International Chambers of Commerce in Japan designed to support Japan’s delivery of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, fostering a legacy of more inclusive communities and embracing opportunities for international business and exchange. This will be achieved through by bringing members closer to speakers through an innovative events programme, as well as facilitating and exchanging best practices. Learn more here.
