ES Global CEO Jeff Burke Talks Semi-Permanent Structures ahead of Osaka Expo 2025

On June 20, the BCCJ marked its 10th Breakfast Club in collaboration with ES Global at the Shangri-La Tokyo. Overlooking Tokyo Station, guests connected over breakfast and heard from ES Global CEO, Jeff Burke, about how the organisation embraces innovation and sustainability in the world of semi-permanent structures.

Jeff highlighted ES Global’s long history with Japan which dated back to 1992 when the organisation set the stage for a Michael Jackson concert. Since then, the company has gone from strength to strength, supporting a wide range of events in the country and even setting up a regional office here in Tokyo. Furthermore, in May of this year, ES Global Japan KK obtained a Special Construction permit.

A big focus of ES Global is and always has been to provide structures that take sustainability into serious consideration. Jeff explained that too often, permanent venues are set up for single-use events which do not fit the needs of the surrounding communities in the longer term. ES Global goes into projects with a ‘precycle’ approach, in other words the practice of reducing waste by knowing how the materials you bring in can be put to second use following the completion of a project. Other topics included previous collaborations showcasing the scope of events that they are involved in, dealing with recent supply chain challenges and adapting structures to counter the threat of natural disasters.

6月20日、BCCJはシャングリ・ラ東京にて、ES Globalとのコラボレーションによる第10回ブレックファストクラブを開催した。東京駅を一望する会場で、ゲストは朝食をとりながら交流を深め、ESグローバルCEOのジェフ・バーク氏から、semi-permanent(準仮設)構造物の世界においてES Globalがどのように革新とサステナビリティを取り入れているかについて話を聞いた。

ジェフはES Globalの日本との長い歴史に触れ、1992年にマイケル・ジャクソンのコンサートの舞台をES Globalが設営したことが始まりだと紹介。それ以来、ES Globalは日本でのさまざまなイベントをサポートしており、昨年、東京に現地法人であるES Global Japan 株式会社を設立。今年の５月には特定建設許可を取得した。

ES Globalの大きな焦点は常に、サステナビリティを真摯に考慮した構造を提供することであり、ジェフは常設会場が単発的なイベントのために利用されることがあまりにも多く、長期的には周辺地域のニーズに合わないことが多いと説明。ES Globalは、”プレサイクルPrecycle “アプローチ、つまり、プロジェクトの企画段階でプロジェクト終了後の資材再利用を把握することで廃棄物を削減する取り組みを実践している。そのほかにも、ES Globalが関わっているさまざまなイベントの紹介や、最近のサプライチェーンの課題への対処、自然災害の脅威に対抗するための構造への適応などを含め、これまでのコラボレーションについて語っていた。
