The application period for the British Business Awards 2024 (#BBA2024) closed on Friday, October 4 at 1700 JST, with the judging process set to take place from October 15 – November 1.

Nominations for the British Business Awards (BBA) are evaluated based on a well-defined framework that prioritises success, innovation, and ethics. Each submission is judged fairly and without influence, with all entries assessed against specific criteria that reflect the core values of the BBA.

Judging Process

The decision on each winning BBA2024 entry is determined through a combined score from six independent judges. These judges are unrelated to the nominees and use the same scoring matrix to evaluate submissions across three categories. The matrix ensures consistency and fairness throughout the process.

The BBA 2024 application categories are:

  • Company of the Year
  • UK-Japan Partnership
  • Entrepreneur of the Year
  • Digital Technology & Innovation
  • Responsible Business
  • Outstanding Contribution

Scoring Matrix

For each BBA2024 award category, the Application Forms contain “criteria for applications”. Each application is scored based on how well it meets the outlined criteria in its respective category. Judges award points using the following scale:

0 points – No evidence
1 point – Minimal evidence
2 points – Reasonable evidence
3 points – Good evidence
4 points – Clear, strong evidence

To maintain transparency, each judge independently submits their score sheets to the BCCJ by November 1, 2024. The scores are then confidentially tabulated, and the nominee with the highest cumulative score in each category is declared the winner.

In the event of a tie, all judges will reassess the tied submissions, and the nominee with the highest score from this second round will be declared the winner.

The final results will remain confidential until the BBA black-tie gala on November 8, 2024, from 18:00 to 22:00.

Please note that judges are selected for categories in which they have no conflict of interest or association with the nominees.

About the BBA

Now in its seventeenth year, the British Business Awards (BBA), a not-for-profit event organised by the British Chamber of Commerce in Japan (BCCJ), recognise excellence and promote success and innovation across all industries. The awards also acclaim the important social contributions made by organisations through their commitment to community, ethical behaviour and environmental sustainability.

Submitting a nomination for the BBA provides organisations with the opportunity to review business performance and highlight core strengths, setting a benchmark for industry standards. Nominations are judged against specific criteria, founded on the BBA values of success, innovation and ethics. The BBA employs a well-defined and tested framework to ensure that the judging process is fair and free of influence.

Winning a BBA trophy is a prestigious endorsement of an organisation’s projects, initiatives, products or achievements. Winners are acknowledged as industry leaders and named the best in their respective categories. This is a valuable measure of success that can be used in a variety of communications creating publicity, positive organisational profiling and heightened credibility. Winners are eligible to publicise their achievement in all their marketing collateral, providing they state the category and year in which the award was won. Winning a British Business Award is the ultimate seal of approval for your business and a subject to talk about with clients for many years to come!
