The BCCJ is delighted to welcome Sarah Backley as the newest member of our team!

Sarah will be in part taking over the responsibilities of Executive Director, Lori Henderson MBE who will be taking maternity leave from February 2020.

Sarah’s role as Associate Director will include implementing operational plans to achieve Chamber goals and objectives, as set by our Executive Committee (Excom); delivering a great member services programme; and managing all BCCJ events and activities.

Sarah studied Japanese and Linguistics at The University of Edinburgh, and as a former JET has spent the last three years working with Oita Prefectural Office as Coordinator for International Relations in the Rugby World Cup 2019 Division. Her background and experience in event coordination, public speaking and cross-cultural communication will bring an invaluable, fresh perspective to the BCCJ team.

Sarah says, “I’m thrilled to be starting at the BCCJ, and especially honoured to be joining the team at such an exciting time for UK-Japan relations. 2020 is shaping up to be a fantastic year of promise. Japan will be cast a major player on the global stage as it hosts the 2020 Olympics/Paralympics, we have the prospect of a Japan/UK EPA which will provide a platform for discussion as we seek to assess our mutual interests, and I’m arriving to a chamber community on the forefront of some truly outstanding achievements here in Japan.”

We are very excited to have Sarah here with us and hope you get the chance to welcome her in person at a BCCJ event soon!
