The British Chamber of Commerce in Japan (BCCJ) is pleased to welcome j Career Co., Ltd. as our newest member. Based in Tokyo, j Career is a recruitment agency specialising in global and bilingual talent — and a company with a story worth telling.

j Career was founded in April 2014 out of a genuine sense of gratitude toward the foreign nationals who choose to build their lives in Japan. What started as a mission to support overseas students and workers in finding employment has grown into a full-service recruitment agency, today serving both job seekers and companies across a wide range of industries — regardless of nationality.

The backdrop to j Career's work is a rapidly changing talent market. As Japanese companies become increasingly connected to the global economy, the demand for professionals who can operate across cultures and languages continues to grow. At the same time, many highly skilled foreign nationals living in Japan still face real barriers when it comes to finding roles that match their abilities. j Career was built to bridge exactly that gap.

For job seekers, j Career offers careful, personalised support — from one-on-one counselling to job matching and interview preparation — all completely free of charge. The team takes time to understand each person's background, skills, and long-term goals, and works with them to find roles where they can truly thrive. This includes both foreign nationals seeking careers at Japanese companies, and bilingual Japanese professionals looking to take the next step at global firms, financial institutions, or consulting companies.

For corporate clients, the support goes well beyond finding the right candidate. j Career advises on how to build more inclusive workplace cultures, particularly for companies navigating diversity and inclusion for the first time. They also place a strong emphasis on what they call 'after-service' — following up after placements to help new hires settle in, and working to ensure that both the employee and the employer are set up for long-term success. It is an approach that is still relatively rare in the recruitment industry in Japan.

Headquartered at Ebisu Garden Place Tower in Shibuya, Tokyo, j Career holds a licence for employment placement services and also runs the job platform gooojob.jp. The company has 20 members of staff and a capital of 100 million yen.

Why did you decide to join the BCCJ? We joined because we want to deepen our ties with the international business community in Japan. Our company was built on gratitude toward people who come to Japan from overseas, so a community like the BCCJ — one that values cross-cultural connection and openness — feels like a natural fit for us.

What are you hoping to get out of your membership? We are looking forward to meeting like-minded companies and individuals who care about building diverse, inclusive workplaces. We hope to share what we have learned about global and bilingual recruitment over the past ten years, and to find new ways to support BCCJ members in attracting and retaining the right talent.

What sets j Career apart from other recruitment agencies? We take the time to really get to know each person we work with — understanding their background, their goals, and what kind of environment they will thrive in. We also care deeply about what happens after the placement. Helping a new hire settle in and succeed is just as important to us as making the introduction in the first place. That long-term commitment to both candidates and clients is something we are genuinely proud of.

What recent achievements or milestones are you most proud of?
We are proud of our strong track record in placing global talent — both foreign nationals and bilingual Japanese professionals — with a particular focus on the finance, consulting,  global, and growth sectors. This expertise led to an invitation to speak about Japan's talent market at FinCity.Tokyo, an initiative launched jointly by the national and Tokyo metropolitan governments to promote Tokyo as a global financial hub. We are equally proud of how we run our own company: putting our employees first has always been a core value, and during the pandemic, this commitment was recognised with a Telework Award from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

What kinds of connections are you most looking to build through the BCCJ? We would love to connect with companies that are thinking globally and looking to bring more diversity into their teams. Whether that means recruitment support, guidance on diversity and inclusion, or advice on entering the Asian market, we are always happy to find ways to help — and we look forward to growing alongside the BCCJ community.
