New Member: Expat UK Tax

Member News

We are delighted to welcome Expat UK Tax to our ever-expanding membership base.

Expat UK Tax is a specialist‑led consultancy providing premium UK tax advisory and compliance services to UK‑connected individuals living and working internationally, with a particular focus on Asia. Established in 2024, the firm was created to address the increasing complexity facing individuals with ongoing UK tax exposure, assets, or reporting obligations, regardless of nationality. From the outset, Expat UK Tax has operated under the guiding principle of 'Tax Excellence Redefined,' reflecting a commitment to delivering technically exacting advice that is also commercially and practically relevant.

From its inception, the firm adopted a specialist operating model. Unlike generalist accounting practices that serve a wide client base across multiple disciplines, Expat UK Tax focuses exclusively on the expatriate private clients. This includes non‑UK nationals with UK assets, historic UK residence, family connections, or legacy structures, as well as internationally mobile individuals transitioning in or out of the UK tax system. This narrow focus allows the firm to maintain exceptional depth of expertise in an area of taxation that continues to evolve rapidly.

The development of Expat UK Tax has been shaped by senior‑level experience within the highest tiers of the UK tax profession. Drawing on Big Four technical training, the firm was designed to deliver the same level of legislative insight, analytical rigour, and risk management expected of large advisory firms, while retaining the flexibility and personalised service of an independent consultancy. This balance forms a core part of the firm’s organisational identity and underpins its client relationships.

Since its establishment, Expat UK Tax has built a strong reputation for advising on complex and sensitive areas of UK taxation affecting internationally connected individuals. Core advisory areas include UK residence analysis, inheritance tax exposure, trust and estate structures, interaction between UK and overseas tax regimes, and ongoing UK compliance and disclosure obligations. As the UK tax environment undergoes constant changes, the firm has focused on helping clients understand and manage risk rather than relying on legacy planning frameworks.

Expat UK Tax has already received international recognition and we are proud to have been shortlisted for shortlisted for the Tolley’s Taxation Awards for two consecutive years, underscoring our technical credibility and organisational quality. This includes being a 2026 Finalist for ‘Best Independent Tax Consultancy Firm’ - a notable achievement that reflects both peer recognition and our unwavering commitment to excellence.

Today, Expat UK Tax continues to build on these foundations, remaining firmly focused on specialist UK expatriate taxation. Our mission remains clear: to deliver precise, technically sound advice that gives our clients total confidence and peace of mind in managing their UK tax affairs.

Meet Stephanie Chan, UK Tax Director

'At Expat UK Tax, we believe in tax excellence redefined: providing the specialist UK advisory and compliance expertise needed to manage your affairs with total confidence from abroad.'

Why did you join the BCCJ?

To provide a dedicated technical resource for the British expatriate community in Japan, ensuring they have access to specialist UK tax advisory that is often difficult to source locally. Having spent years in Hong Kong advising clients across Asia, I recognise the critical need for a cross-border specialist who can bridge the gap between UK legislation and Japanese residency. My goal is to address the nuances of the UK-Japan double tax treaty and manage the evolving reporting obligations of living abroad.

What do you most hope to gain from your time as a member?

I aim to establish Expat UK Tax as a trusted pillar within the BCCJ community. Beyond networking, I hope to engage in meaningful knowledge-sharing regarding the current UK tax landscape, specifically the changes to the Inheritance Tax regime to residence based and what the implications are for those looking to move back to the UK.  I look forward to understanding the unique challenges facing BCCJ members so that I can tailor our advisory to the specific needs of the Japan-based British business community.

What makes your organisation unique in your industry or market?

We are a specialist-led consultancy that combines the rigorous technical standards of a 'Big Four' background with the agility of a niche independent firm. This excellence is reflected in our industry standing; we were a finalist for 'Best New Tax Practice' at the Tolley’s Taxation Awards 2025. Unlike generalist firms, we focus exclusively on UK tax for expatriate private clients, offering expertise in residence, property, and cross-border structuring alongside a comprehensive compliance function to handle Self Assessment tax returns from abroad.

What recent achievements or milestones are you most proud of?

I am incredibly proud that, for the second year running, we have been recognised by the UK’s premier tax professional body. Expat UK Tax has shortlisted for ‘Best Independent Tax Consultancy Firm’ at the Tolley’s Taxation Awards 2026, with the finals taking place in London on 14 May 2026. This milestone validates our commitment to providing world-class advice to the expat community and highlights our success in helping clients manage the most significant UK tax reforms in a generation.

What kind of collaborations or connections are you most interested in building through the BCCJ?

I am eager to connect with any individual members, business owners, or professionals within the BCCJ community who are seeking clarity on their UK tax position. Whether you are looking for strategic advice on UK property interests, pension planning, or simply want to understand the long-term tax implications of your residency in Japan, I am here to provide support and ensure your UK affairs are managed with total peace of mind.
