A history about the LSO and Japan:

The London Symphony Orchestra was the first British orchestra to perform in Japan – in 1963 the Orchestra embarked on a 15-concert tour that became a landmark event and was filmed for a documentary by Sir David Attenborough.

Since then the LSO has returned more than 25 times and has established a genuine friendship with the people of Japan.  Audiences have heard the LSO concerts in many different Japanese cities with the world’s leading conductors and soloists.  As well as sold out concerts, the Orchestra has presented important education and outreach programmes, forging special links with communities throughout the country and working with Japanese music organisations to share best practice and experience.

The LSO has been a leader in cultural exchange and learning between our two countries and our concerts are a highlight for the members of the Orchestra, who are proud of their rich history and longstanding cultural ties with Japan.  Among the internationally acclaimed classical artists with whom the LSO works, we have deep ties with esteemed Japanese musicians who regularly perform with the LSO, including pianists Mitsuko Uchida and Alice-Sara Ott; violinists Midori and Akiko Suwanai, and conductors Kent Nagano and Seiji Ozawa.

This season Sir Simon Rattle has become Music Director of the LSO and in 2018 he will bring the Orchestra to Japan for a series of concerts in September.  As an upbeat to that visit, the LSO Percussion Ensemble will visit Tokyo in March 2018 for concerts and a special evening with the British Ambassador to Japan.  And as the Orchestra looks ahead to an exciting future with Sir Simon Rattle, the close links with Japan remain an important part of the life and future plans of the LSO, with two visits in 2018 and plans already in place for future concert tours,

The success of the LSO’s concerts in Japan has been made possible by the support received for its work in Japan from a distinguished group of Japanese business partners. They have included All Nippon Airways, Canon, Japan Airlines, Mitsubishi, Mizuho, Moore Group, Nomura, Toshiba and Takeda.  The Orchestra continues to seek mutually beneficial partnerships with businesses to enable these important cultural links to continue.
