At this year’s World Architectural Festival (WAF) held in Singapore last week, Klein Dytham architecture (KDa) won “Small Project of the Year” for their Karuizawa Commongrounds community hub and bookstore for Tsutaya Books, which repurposed and extended a 1950’s wooden building which was previously a summer residence for Aoyama Gakuin.

WAF attracted over 2,500 entries this year in 17 categories. Shortlisted firms included Foster and Partners and Zaha Hadid Architects. Mark Dytham co-founder of KDa said “it always great to win at WAF as it is the biggest architectural and interior awards event in the world. Making it to the final shortlist and presenting live is already quite an achievement, but scooping an award is even better!”

KDa’s Daikanyama T-SITE complex won Retail Building of the Year in 2012, and their Soma City Home For All, in Fukushima Prefecture won Cultural Building of the Year in 2015.
