Developing the Next Generation of Leaders: Reflections from the Laurus Leadership Panel

At Laurus International School of Science, leadership is something our students are actively living and shaping today.

In our most recent initiative, leadership was the central focus at our recent Laurus Leadership Panel, a fuly student-led event bringing together leaders from international organisations, business, and the non profit sector including Professor Tshilidzi Marwala, Rector of the United Nations University and United Nations Under-Secretary-General, whose work at the intersection of artificial intelligence, global policy, and ed cation continues to shape conversations on leadership worldwide.

We welcomed three distinguished panellists:

• Professor Tshilidzi Marwala -  Rector, United Nations University & UN Under-Secretary-General

• Sarah Backley - Executive Director, British Chamber of Commerce in Japan

• Kozue Oka - Executive Director, NPO Mirai no Mori

   

To celebrate welcoming such a diverse panel, we made sure that students were at the forefront of the intiative. This time, the entire operation was led directly by students. From defining roles and shaping the questions, to setting up the stage, backboard panels, and overall flow, students were responsible for the entire experience.

It was leadership in action from start to finish.

Our student host framed leadership as something open to everyone - not just those in formal positions:

Leadership as a Journey

So what does leadership actually look like in practice?

Opening the discussion, Professor Tshilidzi Marwala set the tone by connecting leadership to knowledge, responsibility, and a rapidly changing global landscape shaped by technology, climate challenges, and economic transformation.

Throughout the panel, one idea remained consistent: leadership evolves.

'Leadership is not a destination, but a process of constantly expanding one's understanding of the world and people.'

His message emphasised adaptability, which encouraged students to think across disciplines and develop the ability to navigate complexity with both technical understanding and human awareness.

Leadership, as it emerged across the session, is shaped by curiosity, experience, and the willingness to step forward, even without certainty.

Human Skills That Matter

The discussion touched on global themes: AI, digital transformation, and shifting industries. At its core, we were warmly reminded that leadership is inherently human.

Sarah Backley highlighted the importance of listening, relationship-building, and openness,  reminding students that leadership is grounded in how we connect with others.

You could feel the hum of connection within the room. Questions were sharp, discussions flowed naturaly, and students contributed in earnest.

Learning Through Challenge

Resilience was another consistent theme. Kozue Oka shared reflections on stepping into leadership early and learning through uncertainty.

'I didn’t sign up to become a leader - it became a natural progression when I followed my interests.' 

Leadership isn’t about having everything figured out - it’s about growing into the role. Mistakes were reframed as part of the process, not something to avoid.

Student Leadership in Action

What defined the event was student ownership.

Students weren’t just on stage - they were behind it, around it, and responsible for it.They managed transitions, guided the discussion, and handled logistics.

We are pleased to report that they delivered, as we knew they would.

Looking Ahead

As Laurus continues to grow its Next Generation Community Partnerships, events like the Leadership Panel reflect a wider commitment to connecting learning with real-world experience.

More importantly, they create space for students to step forward. Not later, but now.

For Laurus, our aim is simple: to create meaningful experiences that empower students to think critically, act confidently, and lead with purpose.

Because leadership does not begin after school.

It begins here.

次世代リーダーの育成：ローラス・リーダーシップパネルを振り返って

ローラス・インターナショナルスクール・オブ・サイエンスでは、リーダーシップは未来の ためだけのものではありません。生徒たちは今この瞬間にも、それを実践し、形づくっています。

その考えが形となったのが、先日開催された「ローラス・リーダーシップパネル」です。本イベントは生徒主体で運営され、国際機関、ビジネス、NPO 分野のリーダーが一堂に会しました。その中には、人工知能・グローバル政策・教育の分野で世界的に活躍する Tshilidzi Marwala 教授（国連大学学長／国連事務次長）も含まれています。

このイベントの特長は、登壇者だけではありません。
運営そのものが生徒主体で行われた点です。
役割の設計、質問の準備、ステージやバックパネルの設営、全体の進行に至るまで、生徒たちがすべてを担いました。

これはリーダーシップの体験ではなく、リーダーシップそのものでした。
冒頭から、その方向性は明確でした。

司会を務めた生徒は、リーダーシップは誰にでも開かれているものだと語りました。
「リーダーシップは年齢に関係ありません。誰でもリーダーになれます…大切なのは、変化を起こしたいという気持ちです。」

リーダーシップとは「プロセス」である
では、リーダーシップとはどのようなものなのでしょうか。
冒頭で Tshilidzi Marwala 教授は、知識や責任、そしてテクノロジーや社会変化が進む現代におけるリーダーシップの在り方について語りました。
パネルを通して強調されたのは、リーダーシップは固定されたゴールではなく、変化し続けるプロセスであるという点です。
「リーダーシップとは到達点ではなく、世界や人々への理解を広げ続けるプロセスである。」そのメッセージは、分野を越えて考え、複雑な課題に向き合う力の重要性を示していました。

人としての力が問われる時代
議論では AI やデジタル化などのテーマにも触れられました。
しかし最も印象的だったのは、リーダーシップは「人」であるという点です。
Sarah Backley 氏は、傾聴力や関係構築力、柔軟な姿勢の重要性を強調しました。
「ソフトスキルこそが、あらゆる関係構築の基盤です。」
専門知識でも肩書でもなく、人との関わり方こそが鍵となります。
会場では、生徒たちが議論に積極的に関わり、対話を深めていました。
 

挑戦から学ぶ
もう一つのテーマはレジリエンスでした。
岡 こずえ氏は、不確実な状況の中で成長していくリーダーシップについて語りました。
「自分の関心に従って進む中で、自然とリーダーシップを担うようになりました。」
リーダーシップとは完成されたものではなく、経験を通して築かれていくものです。
 

生徒によるリーダーシップの実践
このイベントを象徴していたのは主体性です。
生徒たちは舞台の上だけでなく、その裏側でも中心的な役割を担っていました。
進行、議論、運営すべてに関わり、責任を持ってやり遂げました。
 

今後に向けて
ローラスでは、学びと社会をつなぐ取り組みをさらに広げていきます。
そして何より重要なのは、生徒が「今」一歩踏み出せる環境をつくることです。
後ではなく、今。

リーダーシップは、卒業後に始まるものではありません。
ここから始まります。
