BCCJ Member Experience | An Afternoon of Wadaiko
Last month, we marked the final day of our summer interns with an afternoon far removed from the usual rhythm of the BCCJ office.
Hosted by BCCJ member Blanco Inc., the ‘Ungai Soten’ Wadaiko Experience Workshop introduced us to the scale, discipline and extraordinary resonance of traditional Japanese drumming.
Ungai Soten (雲外蒼天) is a Japanese expression describing the blue sky that awaits beyond the clouds. It is an idea rooted in perseverance and in the reward that follows challenge. As the afternoon unfolded, the name began to feel particularly apt.
Our session opened with an impactful performance, backed with a thunderous light show from the instructor before we were each assigned a drum.
The session followed a segmented structure, to allow time for participants to become familiar with Taiko drum positioning, hitting, and timing, before moving deeper into group ensembles.
The core elements included:
- Basic Workshop: Introduction to posture, hold, and basic striking techniques
- Speed Session: A challenge to see who can play the rhythm the fastest
- Phrase Practice: Practicing specific rhythm patterns
- Music Session: Playing along with music as an ensemble
The programme was interactive, thoughtful, and created a sense of community between all participants. Collective effort was needed to ensure that our drumming remained rhythmic and stable.
Our afternoon concluded with Oroshi, bringing the group together for one final performance before photographs and, for our interns, the conclusion of their summer with the British Chamber of Commerce in Japan.
It proved a wonderfully fitting final afternoon.
After weeks spent working alongside one another, the experience offered a refreshing form of collaboration, very different to usual days in the office. For teams looking for new ways to collaborate in more relaxed, off-the-beaten-track ways, this Wadaiko experience is surely one to consider.

在日英国商業会議所が和太鼓体験ワークショップ！
先月、BCCJのサマーインターン最終日を迎えるにあたり、いつものオフィスとはまったく異なるリズムに身を委ねる午後を過ごしました。
今回体験したのは、BCCJメンバーである合同会社ブランコが提供する「雲外蒼天 和太鼓体験ワークショップ」。日本の伝統文化である和太鼓が持つ迫力、規律、そして身体に響く圧倒的な音の力を、実際に演奏しながら体感する機会となりました。
「雲外蒼天」とは、雲の向こうには青空が広がっている、という意味を持つ言葉です。困難を乗り越えた先にこそ明るい未来があるという、努力や忍耐、その先にある達成を表す言葉でもあります。体験が進むにつれ、この名前がワークショップそのものをよく表しているように感じられました。
セッションは、講師による迫力ある演奏からスタート。轟くような音と印象的な照明演出の中でのパフォーマンスを間近で体感した後、参加者一人ひとりに太鼓が割り当てられました。
プログラムは段階的に構成されており、まずは太鼓との向き合い方、構え方、打ち方、タイミングなどの基本を身につけ、その後、徐々にグループでの演奏へと進んでいきます。
主な内容は以下の通りです。
- 基本ワークショップ： 姿勢、バチの持ち方、基本的な打ち方を学ぶ
- スピードセッション： 誰が最も速くリズムを刻めるかに挑戦
- フレーズ練習： 特定のリズムパターンを繰り返し練習
- 音楽セッション： 音楽に合わせ、グループ全体でひとつの演奏をつくる
プログラム全体を通して、参加型でありながら細やかに構成されており、自然と参加者同士の一体感が生まれていきました。リズムを安定させ、全員でひとつの演奏として成立させるためには、それぞれが周囲の音を聴き、互いに合わせていくことが欠かせません。
最後は「おろし」で締めくくられ、全員でもう一度ひとつの演奏に挑戦。その後は記念撮影を行い、私たちにとってはインターンたちのBCCJでの夏を締めくくる時間ともなりました。
最終日にふさわしい、非常に印象深い午後となりました。
数週間にわたり同じチームとして働いてきたメンバー同士にとって、今回の体験は、普段のオフィス業務や一般的なオフサイトとはまったく異なる形で協力する機会でもありました。よりリラックスした環境で、少し意外性のある方法を通じてチームの一体感を深めたい企業にとって、この和太鼓体験はぜひ検討していただきたいプログラムのひとつです。
