Located in the centre of Shimane Prefecture, Mt. Sanbe is a mountain formed by six peaks surrounding a crater approximately 1 km in diameter, which appears in ancient mythology. It is said that Yatsukamizuomitsunu-no-Mikoto, the creator god of Izumo, used a large rope to tug four pieces of land from far across the sea and tie them together at the coastline to expand the land of Izumo, which was narrow. This is how the Shimane Peninsula was formed. And the stakes that held the land together were Mt. Daisen in Tottori Prefecture and Mt. Sanbe, about 100 km to the west from there. Although this is only a legend, there are still dynamic natural landscapes that make you think, “Maybe that story is true!”
