By the close of the British Business Awards 2024 (#BBA2024) nomination period, we received 44 eligible nominations across 6 categories, showcasing a wide range of talent and innovation.

In the highly regarded BBA UK – Japan Partnership category, the following 7 partnerships are now in contention for the coveted trophy.

The British School in Tokyo –
Showa Women’s University

The British School in Tokyo (BST) is partnering with the institutions on campus at Showa Women’s University, engaging students in diverse exchanges, events, and projects that enrich their educational journey, cultivate leadership, promote British culture, and raise awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), fostering global connections and lasting impact.

 

Drax Group –
NYK Line/NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers/Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co. Ltd.

In 2024, Drax signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NYK Line, NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers, and TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING to develop the world’s first biomass-fuelled ship (bioship). This innovative technology could reduce shipping emissions to Japan by 22%, contributing to global decarbonisation.

 

Lucideon –
Japan Fine Ceramics Association/AKI Japan

Lucideon’s 240 scientists develop cutting-edge solutions to challenging materials science problems from development through to commercialisation. The JFCA builds partnerships between Japanese technical ceramics companies and overseas companies. Lucideon, JFCA and AKI Japan are creating new UK Japan connections and projects.

 

North London Collegiate School International –
Hakko LR Co., Ltd

North London Collegiate School International and Hakko LR Co., Ltd announce the launch of North London Collegiate School Kobe, in the heart of Kansai, Japan. The school is planned to open in August 2025.

 

Oxford Quantum Circuits Ltd (OQC) –
Oxford Instruments Kabushiki Kaisha

OQC and OIKK have collaborated to install the first-ever quantum computer in a Japanese data center, located at Equinix Tokyo TY11. Known as “OQC Toshiko,” this quantum computer provides Quantum Computing as a Service (QCaaS). Japanese organizations will leverage this cutting-edge technology to address some of humanity’s most pressing challenges, including climate change, drug discovery, and the development of new materials.

 

PW Productions –
TOHO Co., Ltd.

PW Productions and TOHO Co., Ltd. joined forces to co-produce Spirited Away’s 2024 European premiere at the West End’s London Coliseum. It was the largest stage production in recent history with a Japanese cast and in the Japanese language outside of Japan, and was a huge success, both critically and commercially.

 

Rolls-Royce –
Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd.

In recognition of the deep and continuing relationship between Rolls-Royce and Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Naval Gas Turbines. The most recent acknowledgement of this relationship is the introduction of the RR MT30 in partnership with KHI into the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
