Ukishima Sculpture Studio was founded in 1991 by Hironori Katagiri and Kate Thomson in Iwate, rich in nature in the middle of Tohoku. Several studios, built on our vast 20,000㎡ site, give us an open working environment, surrounded by rich greenery, to create sculptures from desktop-sized works to large monuments and installations using over 30 tons of stone. Our studios have facilities for us to work with various materials such as metal and ceramics as well as all kinds of stone; complimented by our studio and company established in Edinburgh in 2007. We realise numerous public commissions and exhibitions across Japan and all round the world. Ukishima Sculpture Studio actively promotes collaboration with experts, artists, and designers from different disciplines and genres, to encourage and enable moving beyond the stereotype that “art should be in a museum”, and suggest new forms of art in a strong relationships with society.
