The Tokyo Metropolitan Government recently compiled a Disaster Preparedness Guide (Tokyo Bousai), a comprehensive manual including easy-to-read instructions and clearly drawn illustrations with tips on preparedness and safety in the event of earthquake, floods, and other disasters.
7.5m copies of the guide have been printed and distributed to Tokyo residents, but the creative manga-style design and illustrations have generated so much interest that the Tokyo government has received thousands of calls from citizens of neighbouring towns and cities asking how they can acquire a copy.
The popular guide contains unique and interesting survival tips such as making a “haramaki” belly warming band out of newspapers to warm your body, turning a pair of jeans into a backpack, and turning a plastic bottle into a fly trap. Much of the guide is devoted to encouraging community cohesion, including suggestions on how to help foreigners, ‘who may be feeling afraid’.
