The BCCJ extends its warmest congratulations to radio broadcaster and BCCJ Executive Committee member, Guy Perryman, for being included in the British New Year Honours 2017 overseas list (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for services to British music in Japan.
Every year, the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list recognises the best of Britain by giving out honours to a range of people across the country and to UK citizens living abroad. An MBE is awarded for an outstanding achievement or service to the community. This will have had a long-term, significant impact and stand out as an example to others. The British honours system is overseen by the Cabinet Office Honours and Appointments Secretariat, and nominations are sent in either by government departments or by members of the public.
In reponse to being awarded an MBE, Guy said:
“I am absolutely overwhelmed and seriously humbled to be included in the British New Year Honours 2017 appointed MBE for services to British music in Japan.
“Music is one of the most vital elements of life and I never underestimate its power. I could not live without it. Being able to connect with people through music and interviewing the musicians who create it is ever inspiring and an honour itself.
“It has been an amazing journey broadcasting my favourite music on various radio stations around the world since starting out on public radio as a teenager in the 1980’s. The Japan chapter began in 1990 with Virgin Megastores continuing at InterFM, radio:on and DJ In The Sky.
“This very special honour is not just for me, but also for my family, friends and colleagues – you are a huge part of this journey. Thank you so so much. Wishing you an exceptional new year hopefully filled with music!”
Mrs Marianne Black, the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the British School in Tokyo, also received an MBE. Marianne was recognised for her outstanding voluntary work in the field of international education.
