50 years of Unilever in Japan

BCCJ Corporate Plus member Unilver Japan is celebrating its 50th year.
In March 1964, Japanese businessman Mitsuo Hirano established Honen Lever, a joint-business with a local company. The new venture focused on spreads and oils, with early products including Black and White Pig Lard and the successful Rama.
In the 70s and 80s, Unilever in Japan successfully diversified into hair care, home care and foods businesses. New brands included Lux, Sunsilk, Jiff and Domestos.
When hair care product Timotei was launched in 1984 it was the company’s most successful product so far.
By the 90s Unilver brands were number one in Japan for skincare and in the 2000s they embarked on a Sustainable Living Plan with a focus on sustainable sourcing and fair trade. Ben and & Jerry’s was Japan’s first fair trade ice cream when it was launched by Unilever in 2012.
